Rough Sketches for Music Magazine

Sketches for Music Magazine

This sketch is a rough idea of how I would like my music magazine front cover to look like. I used a large title of "STRUM" followed by a close-up for the main image. I also used various cover-lines in different colours and font sizes so that it stands out on the front cover. I have used black and red pen to draw this as this will be the colour scheme to my magazine.

This is a rough sketch on how I would like my contents page to look like for my music magazine. I want the text to be on the left hand side as that is where the audience will look first to read it. I also wanted a big main image on the right hand side followed by a smaller picture of perhaps a guitar or instrument to represent one of the reviews. I have also drew this in black and red pen as this is my colour scheme for my magazine.

Finally, this is a rough sketch on how I would like my double page spread to look like for my music magazine. I want a large image of the band on the left page which bleeds slightly onto the next in which the text and the title will be on the right side. I want two coloumns and a drop capital as this will tell the audience where to start reading from. I also would like to include a quote which will appear on the image, this quote will be from something that they mentioned in the interview. I have also kept to the colour scheme (black, white and red) so I have highlited the bits in red to show what bits I want to stand out.

Here are the Photographs I used for my Front Cover, Contents and Double Page Spread

This is my interview (in words) I conducted with James Walsh (band member of The Romleys)

Here is my article from my Double Page Spread

From backstreet pubs to  German theatre’s, these newbies are well under way of  becoming Liverpool’s biggest indie rock band. Apart from The Beatles… of course. With a total of 15 records on their hands, the lads have been determined to take things that one step further.
James Walsh, bass player, didn’t hesitate to explain how he and his band mates are closer than ever and hoping to hit Europe again sometime next year.
“We actually played in Germany last year which was definitely one of the best things we’ve ever experienced. That was just a one off like, but I would love to do that again as a full time job, hopefully next year, we’ll see what happens”
He then went on to the topic of how he and the band felt at their first ever gig in the famous Head Of Steam
“It was an acoustic gig really it wasn’t full of electric guitars and stuff like it usually is. We only done four songs and the whole thing only lasted about ten minutes if that. We were all pooing bricks but it turned out pretty alright in the end”
James had known his band mates for over 10 years long before the band was even thought of. As a teen, James had a passion to play the guitar and always wanted to have his own band.
“I always wanted to be in the lime light, I was never interested in going to college or uni, it was all about me sitting in my room with my second hand guitar *laughs* attempting to create songs which failed miserably”
Good to know your dreams finally came true hey James.
In 2009, James split from his previous band due to the band mates always clashing… to then only finding himself meeting up with his old mates from school and forming a new band within the space of three weeks. They had practised a total of 17 times without even thinking about what to name themselves.
“It’s always hard trying to think of a band name which sounds cool but one day we were walking down some back street in London after a hefty night out and we seen Romley Street in big letters
on a sign post and we thought ah yeah “The Romleys” that’s a good name that. It’s a good of name as anything really so we thought lets have that one. Im surprised we all still remembered it the next day we were rotten”

2nd Coloumn
Only in August this year, one of their songs “Shake em’ on down” were played on BBC Radio 2 on the Mark Lamarr show. That was one of the top spots throughout their time as a band.
“Shake em on down is my favourite song that we’ve produced so far because everyone dances to it. When we play it, everybody literally shakes it on down and the atmosphere is really fun. It got great reviews on the radio show so it must be a gooden”
Throughout the course of the year, they had many opportunities to take their success further by performing all over the country. James connoted that they play in London a lot now, and that’s where they got noticed the most.
The Romleys did a gig in London back in the summer in which they were approached by some of the members from the, yes the, Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
“They came up to us after the gig and told us we were brilliant but we didn’t know who they were, they didn’t introduce themselves so we just presumed they were fans”
Only when we left the venue, one of the lads mentioned that their voices were really familiar and that he recognised some of their faces. We figured it out that it was them and we ran back to the venue from our cars to speak to them.
The band have already got most of their plans for the new year sorted. James exclaimed that they met another band called The Wicked Whispers a few months ago at a gig in which then they asked the band to be their supporting act throughout their upcoming gigs in 2013.
“Were good mates with them now, they are a laugh. We are all looking forward to what the New Year brings for The Romleys; the only way is up from here”
Check out The Romleys latest records on soundcloud.co.uk and follow them on twitter for upcoming gigs.

Analysis Of Professional Magazine Covers

Here is my second analysis of a professional magazine cover:

Researching the Market Place

I decided to research two different indie magazines which are both well leading and popular magazines. I found out information about each of the magazines including prices, the audience and much more. As you can see in the video, I researched "Q" magazine first. The publisher of "Q" is Bauer Media.  Here is a link to "Q's" website:
                                                        http://www.qthemusic.com/

Here is the link to Bauer Media:

                                                     http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/

I then researched "NME" magazine in which belongs to a different publishing group than Q. This means that the information is different to Q's including a different price, regular content and publication frequency. The publisher of "NME" is IPC Media. Here is the link to "NME's" website:

Initial Ideas

                                                                Initial Ideas

For my new music magazine, I have decided to go with the genre Indie. This is because I am quite familiar with the music as well as certain artists and bands. My target audience for my music magazine will be between the ages of 16-30 relevant for males and females. Because the magazine is Indie, this will probably relate to people who have an interest in the music (like myself) as well as the images, interviews and vice versa.

Production Of School Magazine Front Cover and Contents Page

This is my front cover for my magazine compared to my sketch there has been a few changes such as larger fonts, better image and also a change of the price. On my original front cover, I wanted the magazine to be free however I have put the magazine up to £1 and put the issue number at the top near the barcode. I am quite pleased with my front cover as I follow various codes and conventions.

This is my contents page and compared to my sketch it has a completely different layout. I have put the images on the left hand side and the text on the right. I have included contact details at the bottom of the page as well as the date of the next issue. Although I am pleased with the contents page, there would be quite a few things I would improve.

Final Images for School Magazine

                                                         My Final Images

These are the images I finally chose for my School Magazine

This is the image I used for my magazine front cover. I really liked this image as its of a student sat in a library in front of a shelf of books which connotates school.

I also used this for my contents page as it relates to my article

Finally, I used this image aswell as it worked well with my article and contents

Photographs for School Magazine

                                         Photographs for My School Magazine

I used this image for my magazine as it related to one of my articles "IRIS Prizes to be Won"

I also used this imge on my contents page because, it again, related to a particular article.

This was the other image I used on my contents page becuase it related to the "Top of The Class" article.

Unfortantely, I did not use this image as it wouldnt match my colour scheme and it wouldnt be relevant to any of my articles.

As you can see this image is blury and the student was not ready for the shot. I will probably not be using this image for my magazine.

For this shot, I was aiming to use this for my front cover. I liked this photo and thought it would be suitable. However, the student is directly in the middle of the page and it might not look right when the text will be added around it.

This is a rough sketch of my contents page for my new school magazine. As you can see, this is a rough sketch so when I come to create my contents page, I can use these ideas and hopefully create an intresting and attractive contents page.
